Objectives : This study aimed to evaluate how drinking during pregnancy affected women's pregnancy weight gain and neonatal birth-weights.
Methods : We gave 1,000 pregnant women self-administered questionnaires asking about their demographic characteristics and alcohol use histories. The questionnaire used the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT-C). After 406 participants' deliveries, we examined medical records of each participant and her baby.
Conclusion : Pregnancy weight gain is one of the most important predictors of intra-uterine growth retardation. In our study, women drinking during their pregnancies failed to gain sufficient weight. However, the study did not prove drinking during pregnancy had a negative effect on neonatal weight. Further study is needed.
