The purpose of this study is to suggest the model of storytelling for the classroom in the EFL context. Teaching and learning activities of storytelling are investigated. Precedent studies and researches on usefulness of storytelling in view of learner's linguistic and affective development are considered.
For this purpose, this study is conducted as the following procedures :
First, this study investigates the definition of storytelling, precedent researches related to teaching and learning activities of storytelling and the selection criteria of stories.
Second, in the view of learners’ linguistic development with storytelling teaching method, several linguistic theories on storytelling are discussed to set the background of the study. Application of storytelling activities is based on the theories and principes of Whole Language Approach, The Natural Approach, Communicative Language Teaching and Episode Hypothesis. How learners study vocabulary and grammar in storytelling teaching method is also discussed. The models which includes linguistic usefulness of storytelling teaching method are suggested with concrete explanations.
Third, in the view of learners’ affective development with storytelling teaching method, several affective theories on storytelling are discussed to set the background of the study. With Storytelling teaching method that arouses learners' interest and pleasure, learners improve and enhance their sociality, morality and creativity. The models which includes affective usefulness of storytelling teaching method are suggested with concrete explanations.
In conclusion, English learning through storytelling teaching and learning activities will encourage learners to participate in the communicative interaction actively and enhance learners linguistic and affective factors. Moreover, it provides opportunities to boost learner’s attention and easy learning. Learners are highly motivated by and interested in story-based teaching and learning. It implies that storytelling teaching and learning method has a great potential as the most effective one for EFL learners and storytelling class will be developed and further studies should be continued.
