This study examines the problem of youth's experience of maladjustment in the Korean church based on Bowen's concept of Emotional System. In order to help youth get better adjusted in the church life, church leaders or counselors need to know that firstly "Church is Emotional System," secondly the Korean church internalized the authoritarianism from the dominant culture, and thirdly this authoritarian emotional system affects maladjustment of youth in the church system.
This study includes in-depth interview which is used by the research method based on phenomenological method of qualitative research. I chose 6 interviewees who have experiences of maladjustment in the church as youth. I classified their representations with Colazzi' method.
I drew out several conclusions from the research described above. The Korean church is in "chronic anxiety" due to the influence of authoritarian culture in the Korean society. Authoritarian culture as chronic anxiety oppresses youth in the church. For this reason, the Korean church formed so unstable community emotionally that youth could not help but leaving the church. This flowing became cyclic.
In order for the Korean church to help youth get better adjusted, the church needs to function as a healthy community maintaining balance between individuality and togetherness. It means the church needs to create an emotional environment where youth can have respect of their individuality so that they can better connected to the church as a whole system.
