As the number of the people to pursue their health and beautiful life increases, due to the development of economic and social consciousness in the modern society, the beauty industry is also growing rapidly. The number of beauty professionals is also increasing rapidly by being encouraged under this trend. In addition, the number of competent professionals with high educational background who have completed systematic and specialized education courses is also accelerating. Thus, scientific ability and need for systematic adaptive skills of the college students majoring in beauty are being emphasized; however, in reality, students with high education majoring in beauty lack professionalism as beauty professionals.
Currently, the beauty industry is facing a chronic labor shortage due to the high turnover rate of highly educated professionals. Accordingly, what is needed urgently is their desirable professional values as beauty specialized professionals. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide the data necessary in order to be able to create human images of reasonable beauty professionals with confident self-esteem which a modern society requires and for them to have highly educated, mature and specialized professionalism, by studying and analyzing the correlations between their careers and academic achievement affected by their self-esteem which is an important part of their internal career consciousness for correct professional values formation by the college students majoring beauty.
For this purpose, in this study, after preparing questionnaires, which are based on the questions that have been extracted through previous studies and theoretical background, I reviewed and corrected the validity and reliability of questions through preliminary investigation, and conducted a questionnaire survey targeting 500 college students of beauty-related departments of the universities located in Busan and Gyeongnam area.
For the data collected, using the SPSS20.0 statistical program, its validity was identified through questions exploratory factor analysis and its reliability was examined through reliability analysis; then utilizing these factors, regression analysis and correlation analysis were performed.
The analyzed results are as follows:
First, as the result of the correlation analysis of the variables used in this study-self-esteem, academic achievement, and career attitude, it showed that self-esteem has significant static correlations with academic achievement's sub-factors, academic achievement, self-regulation ability and all of the sub-factors of career attitudes: determinacy, readiness, fitness for purpose, and confidence. This indicates that as their self-esteem is higher, their academic achievement has been advanced, by encouraging them with positive academic motive, and it also means that they have mature career attitude for their correct career selection and decision.
Second, I performed hierarchical regression analysis to examine the parameter effect of academic achievement in relation to the career attitudes and self-esteem of college students majoring beauty. As a result, although there was a parameter effect of the academic achievement in the process of affecting readiness-a sub-factor of career attitudes, it can be seen that it didn't have a parameter effect on the self-esteem and the entire career attitudes. This means that the academic achievement which is performed by the credits or grades acquisition does not have any direct significant influence on their having mature career attitudes.
Third, I performed hierarchical regression analysis to examine the parameter effect of self-regulation ability in relation to the career attitudes and self-esteem of college students majoring beauty. As a result, it can been seen that there was a parameter effect of the self-regulation ability in the process of affecting determinacy and readiness-the sub-factors of career attitudes, and it also had parameter effects in the process of affecting the entire career attitudes.
This means that the positive academic attitudes, which means that the college students majoring beauty-related are positive in their school life and can wisely cope with whatever circumstances occur have more influence than the academic achievement ability which are performed by learning, on having mature career attitudes in determining their career selection.
In this study, as we find out that among the college students majoring in beauty, students with high self-esteem and correct self-regulation ability have mature carer attitudes in deciding their own career, so professors guided projects and specific follow-up studies, which can guide them to self-regulate with positive self-esteem will be needed-other than uniform valuation methods of credits completion only. Through their school life and learning process in such ways, by giving them high self-esteem and mature professionalism as professional workers, we can expect that they will settle and develop as competent talents and at the same time, the endless growth and development in the beauty industry will also be able to be expected in the future.
