The purpose of this study was find out the effect of the web-based surgery nursing education for nursing students. It was done to verify how web-based surgery nursing education effect on surgery nursing knowledge, self-directed learning capability, learning attitude and clinical technique.
The contents of web-based surgery nursing education for nursing students were developed based on the need assessment done by nursing students, new and career nurses. The learning subjects were the role of the operating room nurse, basic aseptic technique, surgical instruments, suture materials and needles, and laparoscopic surgery equipments used in operating room.
The research design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 56 junior nursing students(28 as an experimental and 28 as a control group) from a university in C-city, Korea, who attended clinical practicum in operating room as nursing practicum for one week. The instruments of this study were surgery nursing knowledge, self-directed learning reading scale, learning attitude and clinical technique. Data were collected from Oct 28, 2013 to Dec 13, 2013. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, χ²test and t-test.
As the result, only the score of clinical technique was significantly higher in experimental group compared to the control group(t=3.881, p=.000). However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the knowledge of surgical nursing (t=.536, p=.594), self-directed learning capability(t=.597, p=.553) and students' attitude toward learning(t=.496, p=.334).
According to the results of this study, web-based surgery nursing education has effect on improving the clinical technique of nursing students compared to conventional practice education. Therefore, web-based education for clinical practice is recommended in surgical nursing education.
