Manufacturing firms recently, has made the formation of a logistics network in the form of management through the outsourcing of a system that was running directly for the benefits of cost reduction and competitiveness of companies, but in the logistics market of fact, most The fact is that it has remained at the level of companies to provide individual logistics services such as transportation, storage, handling and packaging, has not yet reached the provide comprehensive logistics services through a logistics professional.
Manufacturing firms resultantly prefer short-term contracts and often change consignment vendors due to their question about logistics costs paid to logistics companies and their dissatisfaction with logistics companies' services. This eventually inhibits the development of long-term logistics market.
The present study is thus aimed to present the efficient improvements of logistics services for domestic manufacturing firms by indentifying the influence of logistics services and the differences through of the factors and type-specific differences and deriving the difficulties to be identified through the analysis of the overall status and conditions.
To that end, existing studies were first reviewed on the concepts and types of logistics services in manufacturing enterprises. Then, a survey was conducted among the employees working for manufacturing firms in order to analyze the overall status and conditions. The analysis of the survey results revealed that most of manufacturing firms were using 3rd logistics as an approach for their major logistics management and that logistics services accounted for their highest rate of corporate logistics costs.
In addition, the companies running and managing the manufacturing firms without contracting integrated logistics services were found out to be more numerous than those under the contract for integrated logistics services. And most of the manufacturing firms favored short-term contracts less than 3 years. This suggests that they are outsourcing their logistics limited to partially simple works and still have difficulties in systematic, integrated management through integrated logistics services.
Additionally, it was investigated that manufacturing firms regard the relationship between them and logistics service providers as that between the higher and the lower and that they have different perceptions of the relationship with logistics service providers depending on logistics services forms. This implies they need a conceptual shift of thinking of logistics service providers as a strategic partner from the long-term, strategic perspective. The main factor for the difficulties in logistics that manufacturing firms feel turned out to be the lack of their ability to integrate supply chains and at the same time the most urgent thing regarding logistics services was found out to be the necessity to share real-time information by building a 'logistics information system' to meet the demand for logistics services. These problems suggest that manufacturing firms need the efficient supply chain management by providing integrated logistics services via the total professional supplier.
As such, the present study demonstrated that the manufacturing companies, which have provided logistics services individually, are seeking an optimal approach through external integration and that integrated logistics services strategies must be taken by professional suppliers from the point of view of customer satisfaction. In addition, considering that logistics services themselves provide sustainable competitive advantages, compared to tangibility and perishability regarding products, the present study provided the very significant implication that the consistent distribution system and specialized integrated logistics service are needed, the comprehensive distribution system that the shipper wants from the purchase of raw materials and the delivery of final goods.
