Current English education recognizes the importance of integrated education of language. However, due to the lack of lexical understanding, it often results in failure to utilize the full potential of their functions. Therefore, current English education demonstrates a need in appropriate lexical learning strategy. The curruent study focuses on proposing effective classroom lesson methods through the application of affixes.
Many studies have already shown the effectiveness of lexical teaching through affixes. Therefore, the paper addresses the diverse applications of varying affixes and proposes appropriate classroom lesson methods by analyzing five different English textbooks for Middle School 3rd grade.
The analyses of the research are as follows:
First, the research analyzes morphemes. Morphemes largely divide into bound morphemes, and, as shown through its name, affixes require root for them to function properly. Bound morphemes break into affixes and dependent root, and affixes divide into inflectional affixes and derivational affixes. Derivational affixes contain meanings and can trace their origins back to Anglo-Saxon, Latin, Greek, and French. Inflectional affixes do not contain meanings but are affixes that change the form of the lexicon.
Second, the research analyzed English textbooks for Middle School 3rd grade. The study found that the text books contained many words consisting of derivational affixes and inflectional affixes.
Third, the research analyzed different classroom lesson methods of affixes. Current study proposes Kruse's lexicon development method pedagogy and lessons utilizing buzz discussions, cooperative lesson plan utilizing visual and aural aids, and lastly, team games tournament plan utilizing mind mapping as viable affix lesson methods.
As shown above, the paper addressed categories and meanings of affixes and proposed several suggestions to affix lesson plans. The paper hopes to bring students who are becoming disinterested in English classroom lessons back to becoming motivated in English learning. The teachers need to continually research and adapt diverse teaching methods in order to expand their lexical knowledge.
