Everything has its own name. Especially a man receives his or her name from others without his or her will as soon as he or she is born. To tell him or her from others is the biggest reason why a name is given with no regard to a nation or a language. The meaning of 'name' in a dictionary is 'a word attached to things, groups or affairs in order to tell it from others', 'a word attached to the bottom of a surname in order to tell it from other people' and 'a word to cover a name and a surname'. The meaning of 'Theory of Name' was described as 'a word to compare fortunetelling that creates or solves a name to philosophy on an assumption that a good or bad name is related to fate' in a dictionary. My purpose of this paper is to study 'Theory of Name' as 'knowledge about a name'. However, it is overshadowed by a current trend in Korea that people does not acknowledge 'Theory of Name' as a knowledge but underestimate it as 'fortunetelling' or 'superstition'. Accordingly, this paper is designed to investigate many theories for name currently used in Korea and pick up major one of them in order to figure out how effective a name is in human fate.
This study consists of 5 sections: Chapter I. introduction, Chapter II. origin and development of theory of name, Chapter III. theoretical basis and adaptation of naming, Chapter IV. interrelation between name and fate and Chapter V. conclusion. The introduction describes the purpose and the composition of the study and finds out papers already published for theory of name and demonstrates situations of studies for theory of name and displays problems about it and explains how to study. The origin and development of theory of name depicts oriental philosophy and history of name and types of theory of name. The theoretical basis and adaptation of naming enumerates real cases of naming based upon main types and theories of naming in order to analyze appropriateness of them. Chapter IV analyzes positive and negative phases of interrelation between name and fate on the basis of the theories and cases in the Chapter III in order to draw how effective a name is in fate.
In particular the analysis of appropriateness of theories of naming in the Chapter IV covers the adaptation of both Yin and Yang and the Five Elements on Theory of Name. Two cases on Yin and Yang contain both neuter and negative adaptations of 'l', a vowel of Hangul in pronunciation of Hangul vowel. Appropriateness of both Method to calculate original stroke counts and Method to calculate real stroke counts is analyzed on Mathematical Yin and Yang. In addition Appropriateness of good or ill luck of 81 mathematics by Wu Xing of Pronunciation, Wu Xing of Heaven, Earth and Human and Four Mathematical Numbers for Hangul consonant of is analyzed on the Five Elements. Wu Xing of Pronunciation for Hangul consonant compares methods that most namers use with methods the initial sound used on Hunminjeongeum. 81 mathematics for Wu Xing of Heaven, Earth and Human and Four Mathematical Numbers is analyzed only by Method to calculate original stroke counts.
Analysis targets cover 109 persons including 9 former national Presidents, 42 former Army chiefs of Staff, 30 famous enterprisers, 14 criminals and 14 victims at Aung San Cemetery in Myanmar on 9 October 1983. The reason why I choose them as analysis targets is as follows. It is easy to think that a President is able to reach the position regardless of a political tendency or a historical assessment such as an exploit for national development if he has a good fate or name. 42 former Army chiefs of Staff and 30 famous enterprisers are the same as the case for Presidents. When the 72 are analyzed, it is appropriate that the analysis for their names results in good luck for Yin and Yang of Theory of Name. Selecting 14 victims who are well known to public is the opposite as the above cases, so it is appropriate that the analysis for their names results in bad luck. There are some reasons of the case for choosing 14 victims out of all at Aung San Cemetery in Myanmar. They were making a rise before the accident happened. It could assume that they had a good fate and a good name. However, Suffering a disaster will reach a result on Yin and Yang of Theory of Name when their names are analyzed.
No matter how superb Theory of Name is, reliability can fall when it is different from real life. So, it can be thought as fortunetelling or superstition. This study shows "how a name put influence on human fate" and figures out appropriateness by analyzing actual cases. Finally, the study is designed to demonstrate the history of Theory of Name with the origin and development, to find out upcoming direction of development by analyzing the current situation of Korea's Theory of Name, to disclose positive and negative parts of each theory based upon case analysis and to figure out appropriateness of influence which can come to human life.
