The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of collective music therapy on vulnerable class children's self-esteem and formation of peer relations. As for the subjects, experiment group was 30 out of 60 four-to-six graders from vulnerable class who use after-school-academy in youth center, an affiliate of county office in Daegu Metropolitan City and control group was 30. The collective music therapy was administered to experiment group once a week for 50 minutes for total 50 sessions. Both groups were received self-esteem test and peer relations test as pre- and post-test, and t-test was administered to verify the effects.
Followings are the results of the research. First, the experiment group to which the collective music therapy was administered showed the self-esteem improved significantly, compared to the control group to which the collective music therapy was not administered(p〈.001). All the sub-realms like I-myself, friend-relations, family-relations and school life showed a significant improvement(p〈.001). It suggests that the collective music therapy has a positive effect on the improvement of vulnerable class children's self-esteem.
Second, the experiment group to which the collective music therapy was administered showed the formation of peer relations improved significantly, compared to the control group to which the collective music therapy was not administered(p〈.05). The sub-realms like social relations, intimate relations and friendship relations showed a significant improvement(p〈.05). The negative parts like relationship initiative and confronting relationship showed a significant decrease(p〈.001). It suggests that the collective music therapy has a positive effect on the improvement of vulnerable class children's formation of peer relations.
The significance of this research is in drawing the conclusion that the collective music therapy has a positive effect on raising vulnerable class children's self-esteem and enabling them to have a amicable relationship with peers.
