The purpose of this study is to examine how to use American young adult literature as auxiliary textbooks for English education in secondary schools. In America, teachers are using literary texts as teaching materials for language learning. By employing literary materials in the class, teachers can provide students with various class activities that increase not only students' interest but also their active participation. However, in South Korea, as many English teachers of secondary schools are obliged to concern themselves with their students' scores of English proficiency test, literary texts are not usually employed in their classroom.
As a teaching methodology, the Whole Language Approach does focus on the learner-centered classroom activities with a variety of literary and non-literary materials. By taking advantage of literary texts, it is easy to achieve the aim of the Whole Language Approach in the class. In this study, two young adult fiction books Scorpions and Nothing but the Truth are properly selected to make a teaching-model for the students of high school in South Korea. Each model includes various class activities for educational effect and language acquisition. Through this class design, I suggest that teachers can develop teaching methods by utilizing literary texts for an effective English lesson.
