The purpose of this study is to suggest practical way to use animation movie for elementary school students and to figure out the direction of using animation through their awareness and affective domain English education of the using animation lesson.
To achieve this goal, 22 students who are in the 5th grade within an after school of an elementary school have learned English skills by the using animation movie Finding Dory 12 times lesson for a month.
The students were given three questionnaires. One was used for studying the real state of learning English. Another was for analyzing the effects of experimental treatment on the learner's interest, confidence, participation and anxiety. The other was for figuring out the practical way to use animation movie.
For analyzing the effects of experimental treatment, the students were given both a pre-test and a post-test to evaluate their interest, confidence, participation and anxiety before and after the experiment. The results indicated that a significant improvement among the students' interest, confidence and participation on learning English. Especially high and low level students were improved on their interest. Low level students were substantially improved on their confidence. And middle level students were decreased on their anxiety.
To figure out the practical way, the animation movie is used for Elementary students. The students were interested in using animation itself, foreign culture, authentic expressions. And they recognized Shadowing and Repetition of listening helpful activity.
Based on the results of this study:
First, it suggests that the use of an animation movie in English class can help elementary school students improve their internal motivation. The authenticity of movie can motivate Korea elementary school students to learn English.
Second, English class that use animation movies as a tool for learning can lead to a positive effect on affective domain of English. Teacher can give a variety of activities with animation movie beyond the textbook.
In conclusion, the English language teaching using movies can help elementary school students improve intrinsic motivation. Using animation movies as an authentic material can provide abundant comprehensible input to elementary school students in the EFL context as in Korea.
