This study aims to present the diversity of Korean Buddhist music by analyzing the lyrics of Jeong Un moon's Buddhist music. Moon's music was composed based on Western music style and created several various types of genre in his Buddhist songs. This variety of musical styles were reflected in his hymns and songs in connection to the lyrics.
Although he was not a professional musician, he wrote about three hundred pieces of lyrics. He served as a monk and had strong desire to write lyrics for his music. His inspiration towards writing lyrics were derived from the Buddhist scriptures. Moreover, His music was created by several professional composition musicians. Because of the collaborated compositional work from both sides, his music had introduced various genre and style to the public.
Jung Un Moon's intention was to express his heart toward spreading the Buddha's teaching through his hymns and songs and apply it to Buddhist ceremonies, cultural events, and performances.
The overview of the research will be based on three aspects. First, the historical background of Buddhist music will be introduced from the period of 1920's through present time. From these facts above, some of the important Buddhist musicians will be mentioned in detail in relation to Jung Un Moon's personal life and the process of how his compositional work has started from these periods of time. Secondly, the study will focus deeply in detail about analyzing his musical work and reveal about how different types of genres and styles had been invented. Then, in the paper, the researcher will present in detail about how his music can be effectively used within all different types of Buddhist cultural events and other performance places.
Again, the purpose of the study is to reveal his musical work by analyzing the scores in depth. Within relation to these results, this paper will present several suggestions to how his masterpieces can be utilized actively to the public.
