The purpose of this study is to provide practical help for marriage migrants to live in Korea applying contents and means of advanced level class, presenting Korean food cooking culture class using PBL (Problem Based Learning). A typical PBL model follows the sequence of problem presentation - problem identification - data collection - problem reconfirmation and solution derivation - solution presentation - study result organization and presentation, and the PBL model was transformed and applied to culture class. This study added alteration to the typical PBL model by putting problem presentation and problem identification in one process and omitting the process of study result organization and assessment, and it features using the ways applicable to life in solution presentation. Accordingly, classes on one PBL problem consist of six steps: vocabulary and grammar - problem presentation and identification - data collection - solution derivation - writing solution and life-applicable methods - result presentation. Problem presentation of this study is characterized by presenting the problems that are unstructured and directly related to the learners. This makes learners interested in taking classes and encourages active attitudes and creative thinking. Furthermore, solution derivation process can improve problem-solving skills and foster self-directed learning attitudes, and it is the biggest advantage of the PBL class.
This study presented teaching guidelines of the first and second classes on the theme of Korean food cooking contest which is one of the four themes of Korean food cooking culture class. The first class is progressed by learning vocabulary related to cooking tools and grammar that can utilize the vocabulary learned, and team games using vocabulary and grammar to make sentences. The second class will show the distinction between the PBL class and the general lecture method class, presenting how the PBL method is applied to the culture class.
