The movie 〈Parasite〉 is one of the few masterpieces that fascinated both the public and critics of the world as well as Korea, which set a new trend for the international movie scene. With accredited quality, this pure non-English movie independent of US capital swept the top prizes of the film world. Because of such a productive result, it simply jumped over visual media and drew interest and attention with its delicate sensory plot as a means to teach Korean to foreigners. The critical mind of 〈Parasite〉 about Korean society was expressed through diverse sensations.
Accordingly, this study, based on 〈Parasite〉, prepared a teaching and learning model with a teaching plan for advanced-level foreign learners who find no difficulty at daily conversation or expressing themselves in Korean and who can understand and use a broad context of topics including Korean politics, economy, society and culture.
To that end, Chapter II analyzed the sociocultural elements expressed via the sensuous production of 〈Parasite〉. Through visual elements, this study verified economic polarism in Korea where the upper and the lower class will never gain distance on each other. Through olfactory elements, it analyzed the grim reality taking on the aspect of class conflict in Korean society caused by increasing imbalance in income, asset and living conditions.
Chapter III, based on the sensuous (visual and olfactory) production and sociocultural elements, proposed Korean sociocultural teaching and learning model and teaching plan using Allan's instruction model. As the movie 〈Parasite〉 is a good tool to understand Korean people's values and cultural symbols through their problem of 'hierarchical society,'the class was designed not just for the learners to understand the content of the movie but also to present their own opinion about Korea's problem of'hierarchical society' for discussion.
This would provide an opportunity to further understand and make access to Korean society and culture. This clould also prompt communication with students from many countries around the world and present Korean people with a broader perspective on their respective societies and cultures by getting to know more about them.
This study has significance in configurating Korea's sociocultural phenomena by using a movie with an actual issue. It also has a special meaning in using the learners'discussion activity focally for their active participation and presenting it as teaching procedure in working on and seeking for ways to improve this kind of education. In the future, there is need to execute sociocultural education at the scene using movies more systematically and more persistently.
