The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the argument for the existence of ālaya-vijñāna in "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only (Cheng Weishi Lun 成唯識論)" Since The Demonstration of Consciousness-only Studies have changed and developed in various ways across time, the ālaya-vijñāna idea also varies by literature.
Thus, this study mainly aimed to understand the flow of the ālaya-vijñāna concept in The Demonstration of Consciousness-only literature by analyzing the arguments of scholars.
This dissertation outlines the recent scholars discussions on ālaya-vijñāna based on the literature review and previous research and examines the issues related to the formation of ālaya-vijñāna and the changes of the ālaya-vijñāna concept according to each literature. Among them, paticularly focuses on the Sutra Text of the Five Proofs and Ten Theory-based Proofs, the ālaya-vijñāna argument of "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only" which is divided into five proofs based on the Sutra text and ten proofs based on theories. Therefore, to analyze the ālaya-vijñāna argument of "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only" in depth, this study investigates the five proofs based on the Sutra and presents the similarities and differences between the ten proofs of "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only " and the Eight Proofs of "Discourse on the Stages of Yogic Practice", the early ālaya-vijñāna proofs.
The result showed that the concept of ālaya-vijñāna changed and developed by synthesizing the teaching system of arguments according to literature. Among them, the Eight Proofs in the "Discourse on the Stages of Yogic Practice" aim to prove the existence of ālaya-vijñāna, but the Five Proofs and Ten Theory-based Proofs in "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only" use Sutra and theories to prove them, forming the system of The Demonstration of Consciousness-only doctrine. However, the arguments were materialized through the Five Proofs and Ten Theory-based Proofs of "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only" which were confirmed to have developed based on the Eight Proofs of "Discourse on the Stages of Yogic Practice"
In conclusion, this study examines one aspect of the huge flow of "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only" doctrine from the early to the later period through the ālaya-vijñāna argument, the core idea of Yogācāra School's teaching. Therefore, this study emphasizes that accurately understanding the concepts of doctrine is the main task of doctrinal research. it is necessary to research in-depth The Demonstration of Consciousness-only related literature and analyze concepts through the existence argument for the ālaya-vijñāna of "The Demonstration of Consciousness-only" examined in this dissertation.
