The rulers of the early Chosôn carried out a strong anti-Buddhist policy, challenging the privileged position Buddhism had enjoyed as a dominant religion and ideology for more than a thousand years. In this historical context that this paper explores the role of women in promoting Buddhist art and culture during the early Chosôn period.
Of particular importance are the upper class women, who comprise female members of the royal family and wives of sadaebu. These women acted as major supporters of the Buddhist art of the early Chosôn. Their activities suggest that, compared with the upper-class men, women were not directly subjected to the Confucian ideology and anti-Buddhist policy of the government. In the meantime, they were accessible to financial sources available at the court or eminent families.
For us, the long inscriptions accompanying the art works provided invaluable information on the political, social, and economic aspects of Buddhist art created during this period. Notable in these inscriptions are the prayers for prominent members of the royal household, including kings, queens, crown princes, and princes. In some cases, the inscriptions extol the moral supremacy of the kings and express wishes for the everlasting prosperity of the state.
The representative Buddhist art works in the early Chosôn result from the combination of religious beliefs, political loyalty, and social values of these women, whose contributions to the continuity of Buddhist art tradition deserve full recognition and also more in-depth research.
