A powerful local gentry had been worshiped as the god of castle in Suncheon(順天). Kim Chong(金?) was the man. In the Yeosu peninsular(麗水半島) where himself was born, he was the most prominent figure for the scale of his maritime activities during late Silla. In his early life he was connected with Kyeon Hwon(甄萱) who was born in Muju(武州) and served in the same defensive force. As a ruling class in Yeosu and the relationship with Kyeon Hwon, he was responsible for guarding king Kyeon Hwon and had great influence in Later Paekche. He enjoyed the great confidence of king Kyeon Hwon, founder of Later Paekche, thus he devoting his life to serving the king.
Kim Chong was worshiped as the god of castle in Suncheon after he had been dead. First, he became the god of castle in Yeosu county with the support of his descendants in 1350. The local gentry in Yeosu county, involving his descendants, intended to heighten their social position in east region of S. Ch?lla provinse(全羅南道). Thus they worshiped him who had been related to themselves as the god of castle. The raids of Japanese marauders effected to this worshiped. The local gentry in Yeosu worshiped him as a guardian deity, then naturally they accepted the high status in the local society, because Kim Chong was their family member.
Later, he was transformed as the god of castle in Suncheon county because Yeosu county was consolidated into Suncheon(1409), hoping to lower discontent of people in Yeosu. Thereafter a religious service for him had been performed by a proxy dispatched by Suncheon county magistrate till the latter period of Chosun dynasty. In the 18th century the proxy was not a petty functionary(鄕吏) but a Confucian literate(儒生). This seems to show us the degree of Confucian transformation in Suncheon county.
