Korean Terrestrial broadcasters are facing increasing competitive pressure from new media platforms ranging from such multichannel television services as cable and satellite TV to emerging digital platforms of online and mobile video services. Effective competition strategy for the broadcasters should aim at maximizing content distribution revenues from new platforms while minimizing the ongoing erosion of their core business, i. e., mass advertising. For the time being, broadcasters do not seem to employ the best mechanism for sequential distribution of content to multiple platforms. Adjusting the mechanism for the better requires a two-track strategy. On the one hand, by developing viable business models for digital distribution, the broadcasters should pro-actively offer a legitimate alternative to digital piracy that cuts deeply into their existing income. On the other hand, they need to differentiate price and sequential order among distribution outlets in accordance with how much convenience each medium offers to viewers in terms of lifting the time and space constraints of content viewing. The greater the convenience, the faster and costlier the medium needs to be. For that reason, a Web-based download service with a portable viewing option that allows anytime, anywhere viewing, for example, can be the first distribution window after over-the-air broadcast and command a premium price.
