This study examines that the simultaneous development of core competences is necessary for gaining and sustaining competitive advantage. Core competences contain different attributes respectively. they, however, show complementary strategic dimensions. Whereas core competences emphasize technology and production capacity in the value chain, business capabilities, in contrast, focus on the comprehensive groundwork including generic value chain. Therefore, it might be desirable to avoid developing core competences and business capabilities separately and instead to integrate and develop them organically.
