The Company town or Company city based on corporate financing, combines an industrial complex with a self-sufficient city having work sites, housing, education and entertainment facilities.
The Company city project, originally proposed by the Federation of Korean Industries(FKI) last year and aimed at inducing a soft landing for the faltering construction industry, is likely to get a boost from government-level support.
It will do much good for the nation to allow a lange corporation on a business group to build an industrial complex and surround it with parts suppliers and other supporting enterprises. Such an industrial cluster, with a company town name, will produce synergy for the business concern and create job for local residents. It will prove to be a win-win game.
At present nothing looks as conducive to corporate investment as company city. That is why their construction should be expedited.
But building company city is not as easy as it may look. Instead, the plan has become a focal point of conflicting interests.
Another problem with the company city plan is that it does not satisfy society, either. Many civic groups claim the government is giving big businesses too many favors. For instance, the Citizens Coalition for Economic Justics and other civic groups take issue with land expropriation itself. Claiming it can be permitted only when it is for public use.
The guiding principle in debates should be the fact that company city construction will help solve some major economic problems-how to encourage corporate investment create jobs and promote balanced national development.
A self sufficient city expected to eventually contribute to raising the growth potential by creating jobs and boosting domestic demand.
