The portrayals of women in the TV news have been the focus of social scientific inquiry. The purpose of this research is to analyze the frames of TV newscasts on the first professional career woman who gained an achievement in a specific area for the first time in Korea and suggest the proper news frames for the TV newscast on women.
The result shows that the femininity tends to be emphasized more than their achievements and that the episodic frames are used in most of the news on the first Korean professional career woman, which makes their news value get lower.
The research also found five news frames: ‘fruit of exertion,’ ‘bridgehead role,’ ‘advantage as woman,’ ‘salience of feminity,’ and ‘competency acknowledgement.’ In the case study of the first female prime minister, Han MyungSook, ‘conflict’ and ‘competency distrust’ frames are found additionally. Most of the frames except ‘competency acknowledgement’ frame, have such problems as limiting the responsibility for an equal gender society on an individual level and reinforcing the sex differentiation in our society.
It is suggested in this paper that issues on women in the TV news should be discussed on the basis of the social constructional context by using ‘issue- centered’ frame and ‘competency acknowledgement’ frame, and that women’s social participation and their prominent ability need to be estimated from the affirmative perspectives. The meaning of this paper is also found in trying a different approach from the existing research on women who are socially weak or sacrificers, by examining the news on socially strong women.
