In the 1990s there came a turning point when the archaeological excavations of
archaeological dry and wet-field features began. Most excavations centre on wet-field features,
but the basic excavation of dry-fields has rapidly increased. In total 43 agricultural field features
have been excavated. This increase in field investigations demands that new excavation
methodologies been developed.
In this paper we look at new methods and analysis techniques for the excavation of
fields based on modelling cultivation in dry-fields, identity confirmation of field features, and
a literature review of excavated field features. Excavation methods involve modelling cultivation
processes procedure by establishing the total cultivation procedures and methods. A model of
a cycling system is revealed in which seedlings are soil are prepared in Stage I, plants are
tended and cultivated in Stage II, and plants are harvested and processed in Stage III. Each
stage is further sub-divided and together they present evidence of the cultivation process.
In particular evidence from Stage I, soil preparation can be found in greatest abundance.
Some characteristics of growing crops in dry-fields are that the topographic and soil
conditions are relatively variable, many crop taxa are grown, and compared to wet-field
agriculture the planting-to-harvest cycles are shorter and simpler in dry-field agriculture.
Additionally, the confirmation of field features is accomplished through the identification of
characteristic ridge-and-furrow sequences and through the archaeobotanical analysis of
macrobotanical remains gathered from flotation.
The standard excavation of dry-field features includes accounting for site location
conditions and establishing investigation limits as well as vertical and horizontal excavations.
Morphological features such as plot demarcation, border ditches, bunds, and roadways are
confirmed through vertical and horizontal excavations, as is evidence of cultivation behaviour
and tools. It is necessary at this point to strategically establish an excavation baulk so that
direction and orientation of ridges and furrows can be seen in cross section and so that profile
and stratigraphic investigations can proceed. In cases in which dry-fields are subjected to
large-scale investigation, aerial photography and computer illustration techniques are utilized
in order to produce plan drawings of the feature, and soil samples are taken at regular intervals.
Through archaeobotanical, phytolithic, and soil micromorphological analysis techniques we
enable the identification of crop taxa. Finally, we present the total analysis by completing
an analysis of artifacts, radiocarbon dates, and consultation of grey literature.
