This paper investigates the effect of a technology shock on the share of temporary workers in total employment using Korean quarterly data series from 1980:Q1 to 2005:Q4. In 1980s, a positive technology shock leads to an immediate and a persistent increase in the share of temporary employment. In contrast, after the early 1990s, although the temporary employment share increases in the short-run, it declines in the long-run following a technology shock. The evidence supports that, not only the need for flexibility from workers, but also macroeconomic factors including productivity growth have an impact on the relative demand for temporary contracts.
