Unlikely other remains, mountain fortresses contain a wide variety of features related
to the political, social, cultural and economic conditions of the time. The need to preserve
mountain fortresses and associated structures, which have been targeted for development,
is therefore urgent.
Firstly, the existence of records and data is essential for the preservation of mountain
fortresses, as is awareness on the part of local government regarding need for preservation
and maintenance. If these factors are in place, the mountain fortresses can actively be used
as a place of historical education for the community. In order for archaeologists and the
local government to establish long-term excavation projects and consider future uses for
fortresses, field survey is, however, required.
This study suggests methods of field survey which researchers may utilize in the
field. Chapter Ⅱ examines the function and location of Korean mountain fortresses. The
function of fortress structures was based on You Sungryong(柳成龍)'s definition, established
after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592(壬辰倭亂). Differences which exist between
the fortresses of Korea and China, Japan, South East Asia and Western Europe were also
examined. The differences in fortress function according to fortress location was also
considered. It was also suggested that Jung Yakyoung(丁若鏞)'s categorization of fortress
locations into ??峰, 蒜峰, 紗帽峰, 馬鞍峰 was appropriate for Korean mountain fortresses.
Chapter III presents the field survey strategy and excavation methodology of
mountain fortresses. It was suggested that fortresses could be divided into the fortress wall,
battery, fortress gate, moat (consisting of the outer trench and inner trench), ritual site,
and other facilities including water collection facilities, the general's command post and
tile-roofed houses. This study dealt with methods for finding these remains underground,
in addition to points of focus for field survey. It also looked into the cases after field survey.
It is believed that this current research may help researchers find and identify
these mountain fortress facilities during field survey. Furthermore, it may allow researchers
to gather more information from field surveys than previously possible. Finally, it is hoped
that archaeologists and concerned officials will cooperate so that mountain fortresses may
be preserved for future research, as well as used as a resource for the public's history education.
