Food, clothing and housing are the very basic elements of human life. However,
not only does clothing protect us from the cold, it also allows us to preserve our dignity
and identify ourselves as human beings. Even though it is probable that clothing was worn
in the prehistoric period, clothing made from hemp came to be made from the Proto-Tree
Kingdoms period. There are many steps in the processing of hemp fiber. The most important
step is steaming the hemp, which makes the hemp fibers soft and strong, allowing them
to be used as thread. In order to steam hemp, a kiln is required, and based on ancient
records and the results of the most current archaeological excavations it appears that the
first hemp kilns were used in the Three Kingdoms period.
Unfortunately, it is only recently that hemp kilns have been recognized as such
during excavation; previously they had been recognized as something else. The purpose
of this study, therefore, is to prevent further loss of archaeological data concerning ancient
hemp kilns by helping archaeologists recognize the structures in the field.
There are two types of hemp kilns, one being the single-structure kiln and the
other being the separated structure kiln. The former was small, located on flat ground and
relatively early in date. It was difficult to control the strength of fire in this type of kiln.
The latter, on the other hand, was large, located along the slope of a mountain, and allowed
easy control of fire. Because the separated structure kiln was more effective, it was used
for a long time. To excavate such kiln structures accurately, it is very important to consider
the location, structure, and other aspects of the hemp kiln. In addition, the application of
radiocarbon and paleomagnetic dating methods are essential for accurate studies in the future.
