In this article, I try to prove the male-dominated aspect in G. Bachelard's Space Theory through Eun Hee-kyoung's short story, The Box of My Wife and discuss the space which makes our life happy.
In The Poetics of Space, G. Bachelard divided the space into ‘the inside’ and ‘the outside’. He prescribed ‘the inside’ as the warm and protecting inner space and ‘the outside’ as the risky and defenseless space dichotomously. He expressed the inner space, the house as the image of protection, rest, and happiness. But protection, rest, and happiness cannot be experienced in the house, the physical space. They can be experienced only through someone's devotion, service, and sacrifice. It is the woman who provides them, while it is the man who enjoys them. That is, for the man the house is the space of protection, rest, and happiness, but for the woman it is the space where she has to repeat the reproduction labor(housework, child care, and sexuality) and cannot experience them. In short, the house is a rest area for the man, but a job site for the woman. The Poetics of Space is not only what G. Bachelard experienced as a man but also the theory that is based on instrumental and expressive gender role between male and female in industrial society.
In Eun Hee-kyoung's short story, The Box of My Wife, for the husband the house is the space of rest and peace after work. But for the wife it is the space to housekeep for her husband, the patriarchal place where she should have a baby even by the sterility clinic, and the space without any happiness. So the wife escapes into home in the house, her own inner space. The box of the wife, Germanic opening and shutting desk, the armchair, and sleep. These are the inner space in the sense of G. Bachelard's inside. Especially sleep is her own space to take a rest in an unconscious state as well as the inner world that anyone cannot interrupt and violate.
The Box of My Wife is the tragic story about a sensitive woman who dreamed of an attractive life. To escape the choking house that she cannot communicate with her husband, she struggle to fly into her shut-in inner space, go out, and do sexual aberration but only to be sent to the mental hospital and be confined to her fate. She couldn't succeed in her own personalization and the escape from the house.
Obviously, The Box of My Wife shows not only that the house couldn't be an inner space to the woman but also that she couldn't find her own identity or liberty even in the sexual aberration or consumption-oriented going out. In the sex distinction system divided man and woman, the woman cannot find any humane identity and happy feeling of space both in the interior and exterior. Happiness and life healthiness can be found only in the harmony and balance, not in the separation between the inner space and the outer space.
