Wood is a living material which has a very special significance in nature. Because it has played such an important part in people's life since times immemorial, it cannot merely be looked at as a simple raw material without saying a little more about it. No other material radiates as much warmth as wood.
In Morocco there is a saying that piece of wood is not finished until it has been painted. That attitude still holds true in the Maghrib, but in Europe modern tastes prefer the beauty of natural wood, although in medieval times the carved wooden interiors and statuary of cathedrals were aglow with paint and gilding. Paint and pigment may be used for aesthetic effect or as a medium for symbolic-both spiritual and temporal-colour schemes. it can also be used to protect and preserve the wood it covers.
Small timber may be used for esthetic effect and diverse services.
