In this paper, we were dealing with building collection and translation system for Korean rare books written in classical Chinese. For this purpose, we grasped the present status and then tried to suggest a new system. We particularly focused on the ‘Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics(ITKC)‘. That‘s because ITKC has played a key role in the field of collection and translation in Korea.
Collection and translation for Korean classics has put emphasis on the quantity so far. And it seems to be inevitable considering present situation that we still have so many books to be collected and translated. However, we contend that upcoming works should consider the quality as well as quantity.
Regarding on raising the quality, it is suggested that we should build a stable system for collection and translation. Until now, translators or organizations has had responsibility for the works. But we think that‘s not a efficient system any more. So that we subdivided the process of collection and translation to make that work simple and efficient. We laid stress on the following points.
First, we tried to subdivide the process of collection and translation carefully. We also tried to express the role and purpose of each stage clearly. It can help us to figure out the merits and demerits of the results so far achieved.
Second, we tried to include the step of computerization and evaluation in the system. Though these two steps are very important in collection and translation works, they have been unnoticed so far.
Third, we emphasized that ITKC must play an important role as a hub organization for collection and translation in Korea. These works need national support, and need to be controled by authoritative organization. We believe that ITKC has the ability and capacity for these works.
