This study was initiated in order to highlight the locational significance and features of vernacular cultural landscape of Nochi Village, Namwon-gun, Jeonbuk, which is the only village located at the Baekdoo-daegan's Ridge, the set of meaningful landscapes, by clarifying the surface structure of the village and its surrounding landscape from the viewpoint of historical geography and inferring the deep awareness of the villagers with the purpose of conserve and make use of the distinctiveness and uniqueness of the native cultural landscape based on the research results.
Nochi Village has Nochi Spring and the village guardian tree as the center of the spatial structure. The sacrificial rite to the mountain gods of the village, which is the only available one in Baekdoo-daegan in Korea, can be regarded as the cultural landscape element that represents the origin and nativeness of the Nochi Village. Gori-peak of which Korean name means ‘a ring to bind a boat’ serves as the geographical landscape element as well as meaningful landscape which represents the location of the old Nochi Village. The cutting of Baekdoo-daegan's ‘blood vessel’, brutally done by Japanese Imperialism, to root out the Korean spirit ironically shows the locational importance of this village. The remains of stone neck bone figures also serves as a type of historical and cultural relic which is the trace of the brutality. In particular, the division of the village into two sections, ‘Unbong Nochi’ and ‘Jucheon Nochi’, based on the mountains dividing ridge concept, clearly shows the sense of boundary and territory as the dividing ridge that distinguishes Nakdong River and Seomjin River as well as the spatial identity of the village. The interview with the Nochi villagers reveals the appreciation of geographical and landscape location in Baekdoo-daegan, pride and belief based on the significance of Baekdoo-daegan village with Nochi Spring and the stone tower, village guardian tree as the center, and warm welcome and hospitality to the climbers Baekdoo-daegan ridges.
Moreover, other traces of mountain forest culture or precious native landscape elements such as ‘lightening up the plate candle with snowbell oil’ and ‘combing hair with Evodia daniellii tree oil’ have been found in Nochi Village.
