Kuang
Luang
행하는 계획도 수립하고 있음을 아울러 밝혀 두는 바이다.formed in the deep valley in Sangju, Kyungbuk on May 23. 2009. I found some
facts based on the above survey that farmers were cultivating rice using the
water pooled by clapboard in deep valley, and supplying water to rice field in
advance at the time of rice planting. They did like the way to move seedbed at
a time using cultivators and to transplant rice after fixing seedbed. A cow did
not plow anymore and become only a mean to make fortunes, but cow’s
dropping, collected after mixing with straw, was being used for fertilized like the
past.
After the event, I had surveyed rice farming and food culture in Laos between
July 9 - July 17. 2009 after advance preparation. I could find terraced rice field
on the hillsides in Luang Prabang during my survey. I found a artificial pool,
constructed by digging ground located on the top of rice fields in hillside, to
preserve rain which flowed to rice fields in the period of rice planting. On the
one hand, I once saw that farmers were carrying young rice plants on the back
to move from distant place though it was normal to cultivate young rice plants in
a corner of rice field. When farmers were planting rice, they divided young rice
plants, sheaved it, loaded some of it on a carrying rack using long sticks like
bamboo and carried it on the back. Though they did not use guide line for rice
planting, they performed rice planting with keeping a certain space between rice

plants when farmers mixed with men and women planted rice in a line.
Looking back upon the existing results of study, we can not explain about the
origin, development and spread of terraced rice field without Miao(Hmong, 苗族).
Before 6C when??Jeminyosul(齊民要術)??, written by Gasahyup(賈思?), was
published, the northern areas including Shandong peninsular normally made use
of terraced rice field already. Terraced rice field is guessed to be spread in
Korea before the period of 3 Kingdom(三韓) of Korea, but it was developed
actively in the period of 7-9C in which Silla(新羅) unified Korea peninsular, the
number of population was increased, and scientific technologies for many fields
were developed. Viewing from historical perspective, Miao(Hmong) had taken
it’s footing and base in the southern part of Yangtze river in the period of
ancient countries like Ha(夏), Sang(商) and Ju(周), but some of them spread
into some places in Guizhou and finally arrived in the remote place, Yunnan,
through it, when politics was corrupted by the decline of emperors’s authority
specially from the end of Tang(唐) to Five Nations period(五代), and wars were
broken out in many places by government officials and militarist to hold their
own ground in many regions. Integrating all these factors, we can deduce that
Miao(Hmong) was deeply involved in the origin of rice farming through terraced
rice field, found in the Laos’s northern mountain areas, and it’s spreading.
