This study examined two popular television programs on KBS-TV, ‘The Beauty’s Chatterbox,’ and ‘Love in Asia,’ in which female guests with foreign nationality appear to talk about there unique experiences of culture shock in Korea (the former) and a story of multicultural families is provided to appeal to viewers for sympathy (the latter).
Most of the guests who appear in The Beauty’s Chatterbox are young, beautiful ladies from the Western countries and they are verbose on their odd experiences of Korean culture, which might cause some viewers to feel ashamed of the culture. On the other hand, Love in Asia typically characterizes an interracial family introducing its difficult life separated from the home. For example, a wife of interracial marriage is often asked to live as a model daughter-in-law who is willing to abide by the rules of Confucian culture.
It was found that, although both programs deal with the current state of multicultural society in Korea, a double standard exists in showing the stereotyped attitude to foreign members who belong to different ethnic groups through the programs.
