Using representative data from the 2007 Seoul Survey on Shadow Education, this study attempts to explore determinants of demand for shadow education of middle school students. The results show that participation in shadow education is affected by such students' background factors as academic achievement, grade, parental education, family income, the number of school-going siblings in family, and the presence of a housewife mother. In addition, parents' emphasis on English proficiency, intention of attending special high school, independent high school or educational institute for the gifted students, and level of perceived pressure from college entrance examination are likely to raise the likelihood of participation in shadow education. Among school level variables, however, only the average level of parents' dissatisfaction with school turns out to exert a significant effect on participation in shadow education. Meanwhile, the amount of expenditure on shadow education is proven to be affected by academic achievement, grade, parental education, parental occupational status, family income, the number of school-going siblings in family, the presence of a housewife mother, parents' emphasis on English proficiency, the propensity to conforming to others' behaviors, time spent in shadow education, taking private tutoring lesson, and the average level of parents' dissatisfaction with school. These results imply that shadow education is mainly used as a strategic tool for surpassing others rather than a remedial measure for supplementing one's own education in Korea. Furthermore, it is very difficult to quell demand for shadow education because it is heavily affected by individual background factors. In a similar vein, shadow education is also likely to work as an important mediating factor between social class and educational inequality.
