Using a sample from Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey(GOMS), this study attempts to explore the determinants of employment pattern of college graduates’ first jobs. The results show that standard employment of four-year college graduates is affected by family background factors such as family income and parents’ education. Other factors such as marital status, studied major, location of one’s college, experience with studying language abroad, establishment of career goal, experience with job training, and job-searching methods also have a significant effect on chances of standard employment. As for chances of nonstandard employment of four-year college graduates, it was found to be determined by various factors, including gender, marital status, studied major, location of one’s college, experience with studying language abroad, establishment of career goal, experience with job training, and one’s job-seeking methods. On the other hand, the employment pattern of junior college graduates was found to be determined by factors significantly different from those of four-year college graduates, with experience with private education in preparation for employment having a strong influence for standard employment. Also, it was determined that in the case of junior college graduates, females were in an absolutely disadvantageous position for both standard and nonstandard employment in comparison with males. Since the effect of one’s preparation for employment varies by the type of college and employment pattern, it is important for job-seekers to exert choices strategically that fit their actual needs. That is, college graduates must use their time and resources efficiently to pursue jobs in a direction that will result in their employment.
