This is research on the short story in Sabihata, more particulary
on the short stories of Kubota Susumu and Tsuda Setsuko. The
premise is that japanese writers in colonial Korea are ‘settlers’ and
therefore they had to answer to the question ‘what am I?’.
But the strategy for identification of Kubota Susumu and Tsuda
Setsuko is different. The strategy of Tsuda Setsuko was exclusion
of the other and reliance on The Other. While on the other Kubota
Susumu positively shows the japanese-like korean and then
eliminates the difference between Korean and Japanese.
Kubota Susumu and Tsuda Setsuko are all tacitly expose the
colonialism, nontheless they didn't find their identity. Moreover they
did not think of them as ‘settlers’. It is the fundamental problem of
the ‘settlers’ and japanese imperialism.
