This paper studies husband murder cases committed by their wives that occurred during the colonial period. To examine the changing process of issues related to the husband murder cases during the colonial period, it also take a close look at the husband murder cases during Joseon Dynasty. The findings upon investigating 「Joseonwangjosilrok朝鮮王朝實錄」, 「DongaIlbo東亞日報」, and 「Joseon朝鮮」 are following.
First of all, a women who killed her husband in 「Joseonwangjosilrok」 was put into capital punishment without exception, and after the middle period of Joseon, her village's administrative level was degraded while the local governor of the village was dismissed. Second, the age of the woman who killed her husbands was mostly under 20. Most of the killing methods were poisoning, strangling, or homicide while the murder motives were abuse, conflicts, poverty, husbands' chronic diseases, maladjustment to marital sexuality, or adultery. Third, Japanese doctor Kudo Dakesiro said Joseon had many husband murder cases because of its abnormal marriage culture (especially an early marriage) and the husbands' physical and mental disorders. 「DongaIlbo」 after 1930s also attributed the causes of husband murder cases to an early marriage or husbands' physical and mental problems. Likewise, intellectuals defended the wives who killed her husbands both from a civilized man's perspective and from a national perspective. Fourth, the husband murder cases covered in the mass media brought out the effects of controverting the Confucian family ethic. The extreme cases of wives' murdering her own husbands by giving up the position and role as a wife demanded the necessity of a new family norm.
