This paper explores the impact of using non-standard workers on firm performance in Korea. Many firms in Korea have adopted employment flexibility as a way to improve their balance sheets. They expect that this employment strategy can bring about reducing labor costs and strengthening competitiveness. However, most non-standard workers work low-skilled jobs with low human capital, so that using non-standard workers can negatively affect firm performance. This paper studies whether the use of non-standard workers, e.g., part-time workers and fixed term workers, has enhanced firm performance in Korea by analyzing firm samples from Workplace Panel Survey (WPS). This study uses the panel fixed-effect model to control unobserved characteristics of firms. Firm performance is measured by three variables: profit per capita, labor productivity, and labor costs per capita. The estimation results suggest that in general, the use of non-standard workers is negatively related with firm performance.
