This paper is an attempt to interpret the images of women in the paintings of Jacques-Louis David(1748-1825) in relation to the ideal of equality. Equality wasn't dealt with as the main theme in David's paintings produced in revolutionary times. David's works, however, are situated within the political and social context.
Like men, women were aware of public issues, and were swept up by revolutionary enthusiasm in 1789. By the summer of 1791, women were participating avidly in clubs and popular societies, joining fraternal societies for both sexes, attending as spectators the galleries of section assemblies, the national legislature, and radical clubs professing republican ideas.
Nevertheless, equality meant different thing to men and women. The revolutionaries tried to recover the right of equality, but strictly speaking, the equality belonged to men. Fundamentally, women excluded from the public sphere, and the ‘proper’ place of women in society was domestic sphere. The terms ‘nature’ and ‘virtue’ had an ambivalent quality in republican discourse. They functioned to preserve difference and hence guarantee sexual inequality. The revolutionary generation regarded sexual inequality, not just difference, as a natural and a rational arrangement.
