This essay discusses St. Thomas Aquinas’s justifications on the use of icon in Catholic devotion and attempts to relate them to the broader context of contemporary religio-political circumstances, especially the tension of Christendom in front of the physical and theological threats of Islam. As his Summa Theologiae (1272-73) de facto embodied the orthodox theology of Christendom, his theory of icon has served as the basis for iconophile discussions throughout the following centuries. In short, St. Thomas Aquinas inherited and further developed the theses of St. John of Damascus (676-754) and formulated the theological gists for later iconophiles, the most significant of whom was Jerome Emser (1477-1527), strong advocate of Catholic devotion during the era of the Reformation.
Christology and epistemology constitute the core of St. Thomas Aquinas’s justifications on the use of icon. Icons are useful, first because Christ Himself came to us in a bodily existence, and secondly because we can easily grasp the meaning of the invisible through the metaphor of the visible. St Thomas Aquinas’s discussion of icon, like many of his other issues, needs to be understood in relation to his awareness of the imminent threats of the infidels. Crusader’s campaigns continued throughout his life time, and being the successor of Aristotle the saint had to deal with and refute the Arab successors of the philosopher such as Avicenna and Avipacem. Not only in such academic veins, but also in practical theology, he wrote multiple works to convert the muslims in the recovered territory in war against the Spanish and Eastern Islam.
