Seokguram, one of the most famous work of arts in Korea, has been regarded as a cave temple like the Ajanta cave in India. Concerning the Seokguram, Koreans have thought of the monument as a cave temple. However Seokguram was actually built with lots of stones. At this point, it is different from any other cave temples in India, Central Asia, and China. Many people still incline to think Seokguram to be a cave rather than an architecture. Since the cave temples of India were created by cutting off from the surfaces of rocks, the way of constructing between Indian caves and Seokguram was totally different. Most of the people think Seokguram has a close connection with the cave temples of India like Ajanta. Including the scholarly approaches, it is more emphasized that Seokguram is a cave temple like an Indian counterpart. This idea has a long history back to the early 20th century. Since Japanese imperialists rediscovered Seokguram, Japanese scholars made the theory that the structure and idea of Seokguram as a cave originated from India. They compared Seokguram with Chinese cave temples such as Yun-gang, Lung-men and Tienlung- shan, which had been also rediscovered during those periods. It seems clear that the rediscovery of Seokguram was closely connected with the world-wide rediscoveries of cave temples.
When a few Japanese scholars insisted that Seokguram was the one of three treasures in Asia, many people agreed. Japanese argued that they possessed the core of Asian culture including Buddhism and Buddhist Arts. They made Seokguram one of the greatest cave temple sites, which had been transmitted to Korea from India through the Silk Road, in the East. Japanese knew almost all their ancient arts came from Korea during the Three Kingdoms Period. They thought the more brilliant the Buddhist arts in Korea were considered, the more highly valued the Japanese Buddhist arts would have been. So they made propaganda for Seokguram to be an orthodox cave temple which had followed Indian cave temple tradition. This idea about Seokguram, based upon the cave temple theory, has influenced both the Koreans and the Japanese. It did not take a long time for the theory to become a ‘Paradigm for Seokguram’. Even if it is one of the oldest architectural structure, not a rock-cut cave, people do not take the disparity between the two types of structure seriously. Under the paradigm, people would not be able to entirely recognize the various characteristics of Seokguram.
