Palace construction in Korea involves the unique combination of public quarters with private quarters, which was later institutionalized as the principle termed the “principle of jeonjohuchim (前朝後寢).” Here the space labeled“jo” was referred to as “chijo” as it was seated in between the buildings called “jeongjeon” and “pyeonjeon” reserved for political affairs. In the east of the buildings is the palace for the Crown Prince, which was called “donggung (東宮),” “chungung (春宮),” or “cheonggung (靑宮).” The names that imply direction, season, and color as suchthe concept of five elements in Chinese cosmogony.
The Crown Prince is the royal heir to the throne. Rather than actively participating in politics, he was supposed tohimself for the throne by learning virtues from Confucian scholars- teachers. Nevertheless, the hierarchy between the prince and his subjects was confirmed by the ceremonies held in the princely palace. Any political discussions was done exclusively for educational purposes during the private lessons for the Crown Prince.
There were several instances of politics by proxy(代理聽政) in which the Crown Prince as the proxy received morning greetings from the King's subjects and discussed political affairs with them. They were the special occasions when the prince was entitled to make political decisions on behalf of the King. All that was needed for theprincely quarters were the residential quarters of the prince and his family and the lecture room. Accordingly, a new place for the Crown Prince to carry out his duties as the proxy King had to be prepared near his quarters. This essay summarizes the Crown Princes and the process of their ascendancy to the throne and briefly examines changes in the princely quarters in each palace by dividing the Joseon dynasty into two periods; the early period and the late period.
