Quedae Lee (1913-1965) was a symbolic artist in Korea during the twentieth century, through an era defined as the Colonial period under Japan’s rule, and the ideological division of South and North Korea. During the Colonial period, Quedae Lee emphasized national identity by opposing pro?Japanese art. He was advanced in building the idea of New Art by breaking up pro Japanese art. His name appeared?on the list of artists ideologically preferring North Korea through the influence of the Korean War. Thus, in South Korea, his name became prohibited since he was viewed as a pro communist artist. He was also considered uncooperative with the schemes of Kim Il Sung in North Korea and consequently excluded. Eventually, his name was removed from the art history of Korea.
However, in 1988, his name was officially cited in a listing of pro?communist artists in South Korea. Furthermore, he has become acknowledged as one of the nation’s greatest artists; surviving family members have?published catalogues of his numerous paintings. In 1999, he was formerly introduced in a dictionary of artists recognized by North Korea.
Quedae Lee was an artist who endeavored to establish the real democratic art during a period of?conflict and contradiction with tradition vs. modern, East vs. West, and the ideology of left vs. right. His discourse focused on the art world of national identity and time spirit throughout a dark era. Its specific logic was based on revolutionary romanticism and progressive realism. His greatest contribution was his ability to address, reflect, and confront political situations and topics in his art.
