In general, modern theories are based on Quintilian classifications of tropus and figura. But the problem is that modern language theorists have had no reflection on the question of relationship between barbarismus and tropus, or between soloecismus and figura. Therefore my paper attempts to give some critical reviews on the views of modern linguists and rhetoricians who have neglected historical aspects of tropus and figura studies. My work gives some detailed answers to the question how the theories of tropus and figura had historically been developed, primarily based on some explanations for barbarismus and soloecismus. My analysis has two major suggestions. First, though originating from soloecismus, the figura-theory should be compared with pragmatics from modern linguistic views. Second, two theories, a grammatic study and a tropus-theory, derived from barbarismus; while the former theory treats problems of anomalia-phenomena in Greek and Latin language, the latter deals with the topics of metaphor, allegory, metonymy and etc. My discussion argues, in the light of tropus-problem, that the tropus- barbarismus is a kind of semantic, to which most scholars draw no particular attention. This gives good reason for us to discuss and to illuminate the topic of barbarismus. But our discussion demands a new edition for Tryphons de tropis. During this analysis I have found newly two manuscripts, which Spengel did not read and so did not reflect on his edition. One is cod. Marc. 512 and the other is cod. Par. 1741.
