This article examines King Jungjo's On the pen name "the Master of Ten Thousand Rivers and the Moon" 萬川明月主人翁子序 and argues that this pen name which is an allegory of li yi fen shu 理一分殊 shows redefinition of the relation between king and subjects. Generally, li yi fen shu is a Neo-Confucian concept to explain the unity between the self and the world. By understanding li yi fen shu the Neo-Confucian self can be a moral-political subject who takes part in the realization of the political ideal. When King Jungjo borrows and uses this concept to establish the new kingship, and compares himself to li理 or taichi太極, the meaning of the self described as fen shu分殊 becomes an agent in the political program offered by the king. King Jungjo held that he himself is to embodiment of the two traditions of governance and the Way, to be a sage-king who will realize the Neo-Confucian political ideal, that is the unifying the world. However, his attempt to establish the new kingship through redefinition of li yi fen shu thus results in the separation from the Neo-Confucian political ideal.
