In general bronze mirrors they have images on the back, however, 鏡像 (mirror-face images, kyozo) have those of Buddhas or bodhisattvas on the front face or on both sides of bronze plates which served as a mirror.
In this study, the old term 鏡像 will be replaced by the new term 線刻佛像鏡 (Bronze Mirrors Incised with Buddhist Images). The former one was a Japanese terminology borrowed from ‘鏡像圓融’ of 摩訶止觀 which was an metaphorical expression to be adapted for better understanding on Tiantai thought. Another reason for the replacement is that 水月觀音鏡像 which was found among relics enshrined inside of Sakyamuni of 淸凉寺 in Japan was referred as ‘水月觀音鏡子’ in 入瑞像五藏具記捨物 also found in the same statue. This simply shows that the term 鏡像 was not used to name this kind of mirrors in those days.
A clue for the usage of the bronze mirror with Buddhist images on it can be found in the caption “燕山住撥鏡壇人王斌” of 線刻准提?白衣觀音鏡 in the Korean National Museum. This has allowed an assumption that those mirrors were used for religious scenes as main equipments of 鏡壇 (Bodhi site with Mirror stand, jiangtan) where rituals took place. The iconography depicted the images of Buddhas and bodhisattvas emerging on the surface of the mirror when practitioners contemplated facing it. Some references for this ceremony are; 不空? Murals from Dunhuang Cave No. 31, 23 and 大理梵像圖卷 in Taiwan National Palace Museum Collection are living examples of the settings of mirror platforms.
Those Dunhuang paintings of Tang Dynasty serve as a good evidence for the existence of the mirrors in that period. And it was possible that the mirrors made in Tang were introduced into the Unified Silla Period of Korea. Besides a large quantity of mirrors excavated in 吳越 region in China shed light on the possibility of direct importation of the mirrors into early Goryeo, through the active religious exchanges. It was in late Goryeo that production of those mirrors were made. This was partly due to the great popularity of sutras supporting 鏡壇, and also due to the aspiration not only for the rebirth in the Pure Land but also for the protection of individual and nation caused by social and political crisis such as Mongol Invasion and the exchange of ruling power, which brought the prosperity of Esoteric Buddhism.
The iconographies of 線刻佛像鏡 in the Goryeo Period are characterized as the pursuit of worldly merits and the rebirth in later life. Especially, the combination of Avalokitesvara and Amitaba demonstrate the proliferation of Pure Land Faith of which focus was laid in the happiness in after life, so, from this point of view, those bronze mirrors with those two figures can be considered to be mainly used at the rituals to accumulate merits for the deceased, for example at the 童子水陸齋. Meanwhile, Cundi and Avalokitesvara accompanied by 毘沙門天 suggest the relationship between these mirrors and Esoteric Buddhism based on dharani faith. The Iconography including Avalokitesvara, 毘沙門天 and Manjusri symbolizes the strong will to overcome the disaster and to protect the nation through taking refuge in dharani.
