A lot of small golden Buddha statues remarkably tiny sized 5-20cm tall were manufactured compared to those of other eras, which is a peculiarity of Buddha statues from the late Goryeo to early Joseon (the late 14th and early 15th century) period. There are still around 50 Buddha statues remained in South and Korea areas. Among them, many small golden Buddha statues known their unearth places are from rock of famous mountains such as Gumgang mountain (金剛山) of Gangwon province, Myohyang mountain in Pyungnam province, Sangwang mountain in Chungcheongnamdo province, which are assumed to have been made for specific purposes and goals.
Many Buddha statues unearthed from Gumgang mountain, at the point of excavate status, were found in deep tunnels which made a hole through the vertical rock to put several statues or sometimes to put ceramic ware or shrine inside statues. Six statues of golden Buddha statues unearthed at Sangwang mountain in Chungnam province were found inside ceramic ware shown an express statement of incised, which is an example to give attention. The statement shows the name of nations as Goryeo and Joseon, Sangwang mountain, region and sentence as many Buddha statures enshrined into top of mountain (國前名高麗國 後名朝鮮國 地山象王山名 東伊山郡 西丁海郡 山頂諸佛接), which said that many statues were laid between AD 1392-1407 on the top of Sangwang mountain located at Seosan village in Chungnam province. This gives us an interesting observation, since it has a similar tendency as all the Buddha statues unearthed at Gumgang mountain found at the top of the mountain.
Many small golden Buddha statues of this era showed special technical characteristics different from previous period. They were not just made from bronze mixed copper and tin used from the past, but also from brass made by copper and zinc, and silver Buddha stature made from mixed copper and silver. The statures were manufactured mostly by casting, repousse, incised, ring-matting technique, and their distinct feature is a votive articles put into statue and finalized with bronze plate. Sometimes, Buddha statues and throne Pedestal were together cast, but in other cases they were made separately. When making Buddha statue and Pedestal, other materials and techniques were used and sometimes jewels were put into the Pedestal. This is a distinct feature discriminating the statues of Buddha from those of previous periods. The votive inscription found inside Buddha statue had no written sentence, which was different from the general formats. This is assumed to be enshrined in the vertical rock of the mountain. Among the articles inside chest of stature, they put the articles made of metal eight leaves shaped (八葉盒) instead of wooden eight leaves shaped.
From the above mentioned characteristics, silver Buddha statues, repousse, incised, ring-matting techniques were influenced by the craft items popular at the time. Besides, a golden Buddha statue, a carving incised technique on the Pedestal, a manufacturing method of copper plate beneath Buddha statue and finalizing by chisel cut, and a technique setting a jewel in a Pedestal were the distinct features in statures of the Yuan dynasty. In particular, it was assumed to get influence, directly or indirectly, by Wien dynasty statue imported into Goryeo or Yuan craftsman from Mt. Geumgangsan. In addition, the methods making the Buddhist stature and Pedestal with different techniques and materials or repousse, incised technic, ring-matting technic were changed into Goryeo style.
The background of style, manufacturing, new material usage and technique change was related with the religion of Mt. Geumgangsan populated from late Goryeo dynasty. In particular, that is assumed to get influences by Mt. Geumgangsan religion of Chinese Royal family and their Buddhism activity, many Wien craftsman entering into Goryeo and their manufacturing activity. Gumgang mountain religion originated from Goryeo and Yuan Royal families were directly and positively related with Buddhism activity, which gave influences to ordinary people. This trend was also extended into Jeseon dynasty and Ming.
The name “Mt. Geumgangsan” mentioned directly in the Book titled Whaomgyong (華嚴經) and a belief not to be fallen into hell after death gave influence to various donators and Buddhism activities, which expanded into Buddhism temples at Gumgangsan and put the Buddhist statures on the top of more secure and famous high mountains.
As a consequence, enshrinement into mountain rock was became most popular from the King Lee Seonggae's enshrinement of relic of Buddha at Biro mountain to ordinary people's small golden Buddha statue. Also, donators' activity showed various trends such as statues were put inside expensive chinese ware like a white porcelain and golden Buddha shrine or left statue.
The production of small golden Buddha statues and a belief of rock were declined because of overall society tendency caused by suppression of Buddhism in Joseon dynasty. It became almost declined by the full-scaled suppression policy on Buddhism in 15th century staring King Yeonsan to King Jungjong.
