Robert Irwin began his artist career as an Abstract Expressionist painter in the late 1950s, and expanded his interests into environmental installations initiating new perceptual experiences of the given space. In producing his earlier dot paintings and signature discs, Irwin was almost obsessed with the material perfection of his works. The artist’s meticulous craftsmanship was paradoxically a means to deny the physical essence of the medium, including flatness, rectangular frame and form of painting, as was defined by Clement Greenberg. Contemporary artists, such as Donald Judd, who would later be known as Minimalists, also reacted against the Greenbergian doctrine of Modernism in diverse ways. If Judd dispersed the conventional division between painting and sculpture and put emphasis on the literal objecthood of artwork within real space, Irwin moved his focus from the physical presence of the work toward perceptual experience within duration.
From 1967 to 1971, Irwin participated with Art and Technology Program organized by Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Teamed with Ed Wortz specializing in experimental psychology and young artist James Turrell, Irwin attempted to incorporate the sensorial experiences of anechoic chamber, Ganzfeld, and alpha-conditioning with the museum space. Throughout the experiments, Irwin galvanized his interests in the limits of human perception within an extreme environment where one is completely deprived of visual and aural stimuli. In his installations after 1970s, Irwin has concerned more with the perceptual capability discerning between transparency and opacity, curved surface and flat plane, object and space, material and the immaterial, tactile thing and surrounding space rather than the difference between figure and ground within a painting frame.
In contemporary art history, Irwin posits a marginal or secondary place within Minimalism. Especially art historian Rosalind Krauss and the scholars contributing to the authority of the journal, October, in particular, criticized Irwin’s practices as pursuing perceptual illusion instead of Minimalism’s literal objecthood and contingent relationship with the space. The analysis of discursive languages of Minimalism and Irwin’s criticism exposes a conventional divergence or even rivalry between East coast and West coast of the American art and culture.
