On the first half of 1920, Marxism was risen up on the main stage of the Korean Socialism in both aspects of social activities and thoughts. In order to establishing Modern society and backing up the rapid and quantitative expansion of the socialist movement, both the Western thoughts and Marxism was translated. Especially, the colonized Korea experienced the re-translated modern by way of Japan. In case of the re-translation, I focus on the original tests of Karl Marx. Especially the first translated and published text was the Handbook of Historical Materialism in the preface of For the Political and Economic Critic.
On March and April in 1921, this article was translated by Yun Ja Yung and Shin Pack Woo based on Sakai Toshihiko's translation version. Moreover, It was again translated in 1924 by Jung Back and Il Dang(pen name). In was intensively introduced through many different media such as magazine and newspaper. I am interested in the social situation on the twice translation. The former version was translated for the intellectuals but the later was for the mass with the fully explanation on the historical materialism. Because of the this translation, Korean socialists and people had come to know that history is progressive, and the belief on the change from capitalism to socialism, and the Japan should be inevitably broken down according to this historical law.
