(i.e. Wiki) or open source software is not widely used, while the
individual collective intelligence model such as “Jisik-(which means
knowledge in Korean)-iN” is actively utilized in Korea. This study
aims to identify social and cultural reasons why collaborative collective
intelligence has not been fully developed in Korea. In this regard,
we’ve conducted a survey of 600 collective intelligence participants in
Korea and the US to analyze differences between groups in motivations
for usage and contribution about collective intelligence, preference in
collective knowledge production model, and the perception of
collective knowledge culture.
First, the most outstanding difference between the Korean participants
and the American participants is the perception of collaborative
knowledge production culture which was measured by the questions
such as ‘Do you think if there are firm and enough institution and
culture to activate the collaborative knowledge culture which is
composed of discussion, cooperation, peer review etc.?’ Though
Koreans think the elements for collaborative collective intelligence
important as much as Americans, they don’t regard there are enough
social and cultural surroundings to boost those values.
Second, the most different thing between the contributors of
Wikipedia and those of Jisik-iN is the preference for collective
knowledge production model and the perception of collaborative
knowledge production culture. However, the fact that the domestic
Jisik-iN has more optimistic perception about the collaborative
knowledge production culture than Wiki contributors in Korea is a
natural ex post result. In other words, the result reflects the
experience of poor collaborative culture and systems Wiki contributors
in Korea have underwent while using the Wiki. The interpretation is
backed up by the fact that Wiki users in the US think the
collaborative knowledge production culture is well in place.
The study recommends to reform the education system for the
effective discussion culture. Moreover, the study urges the Korean
government to play an active role in opening information and sharing
knowledge, to develop collective intelligence in Korea.
