The 3rh convention of North Korea's Workers' Party(KWP) which was held on 28th September 2010 was used to signal of Kim Jong-un' s anointment as heir to his father Kim Jong-Il. The representatives at the convention re- appointed Kim Jong-il as general secretary of the WPK and hailed to his achievement through the Military First Policy. They revised the current and future objects and eliminated term of 'Communism' in its KWP's regulation, but there's no fundamental change of KWP's ideology and direction. They voted for delegates to constitute the Party's Central Committee, the Politburo, members of a standing committee and the Central Military Commission etc. This election means the restoration of the Party's collective guidance system and function that have been suspended for almost 16 years since Kim Il-sung died in 1994.
Kim Jong-un was elected as vice chairman of Party's Central Military Commission and he had been appointed as a four-star general one day earlier this convention. Now it is on progress that the younger Kim would co-lead the country by sharing the authorities with his father. But Kim Jong-il and his son will face lots of challenges from both domestic and abroad. Father Kim has severe health problems after a stroke in 2008. Son Kim is too young and of no experience to lead the party and military cadres. Therefore some of their relatives and high ranked generals were selected to support with full royalty in the process of power transition. They are Kim Kyong-hui, Kim Jong-il's only sister, her husband Jang Song-thaek and Vice Marshal Ri Yong-ho, chief of the Korean People's Army General Staff who has emerged as the most powerful military figure. It can be anticipated the power struggles among the Party, Military members and civil resistances due to the severe food shortage.
In process of power transition in N. Korea, there's a possibility that younger Kim and his entourages could follow the Chines economic reform model and strengthen the relationship with China while making military threats periodically and showing their interest in obtaining foods and economic supports from South Korea.
