This study aims to clarify H. Siegel's concept of critical thinking. First of all, in the composition of critical thinking, Siegel viewed that the critical thinking was composed of the reason assessment factor which referred to the ability to assess reason with appropriateness and the attitudinal factor to pursue this. That is, he viewed that critical thinking might include this dispositional factor. For Siegel, the question whether the critical thinking is discipline- or domain-specific, or whether it can be domain-general, is the most disputatious problem in the discussion of the substance of critical thinking since it is directly related to the problem of selecting and organizing curriculum in educational practice. About this, Siegel holds on to the position of generalization about a critical thinking skill while relying on the potential existence of a general thinking skill and its availability.
Next, in the relationship with critical thinking and rationality, Siegel insists that the critical thinking is not a part of rationality but the coextensive concept because it is reason assessment in a skill's aspect and the reason assessment is rationality itself. This insistence sometimes overlooks the rational performance that doesn't assess the reason and seems to magnify the concept of critical thinking excessively. So, though the concept of critical thinking takes an important part of rationality, composed of reason assessment ability and critical spirit in the pursuit of this, Siegel's insistence of it to be the coextensive concept with rationality seems to be difficult to be generally accepted.
